In June 2016, Ulisses Sabará Matiolli was named the “Pioneer of Sustainable Development” by the UN Global Compact organization. This is a portrait of a man who changes the world.

New explorers

The UN Global Compact of the United Nations, of which HTS BIO became a signatory this summer, encourages companies to respect and promote human rights, international labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption.

In June 2016, the organization elected “pioneers of sustainable development”: ten contractors working towards sustainable development and demonstrating the economic, social and environmental benefits it generates.

Ulisses Matiolli Sabará, president of the Brazilian company Beraca, was among them.

Acai, murumuru, cupuaçu and so on

Based in Brazil, the BERACA Company, created and directed by Ulisses Sabará Matiolli, provides the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry with ethical and certified organic natural ingredients sourced in the Amazon and other regions of Brazil.

These ingredients include: Acai Oil (a “super fruit” rich in antioxidants), ucuuba (rich in vitamins A, C and E), murumuru butter (palm tree that Indians Ashaninka consider an “ancestor”), natural mineral pigments, plant scrubs and other complex active ingredients.  The Brazilian ecosystems are full of resources with proven virtues.

The Odyssey of Ulisses

For this son of an entrepreneur, everything seemed preordained: along with his brother he would take over his father’s chlorine distribution company. But, during a trip to the Amazon rainforest, Ulisses was struck by the stark contrast between the lush richness of the region’s resources and its economic and social deprivation.

Recognizing the tremendous potential before him, Ulisses shaped his project around three main areas: products, people and the environment.

Cooperatives were created with products coming exclusively from local harvests. In 2000, Ulisses created local platforms that integrated resource-processing knowledge to manufacture products marketed by BERACA.

Sustainable Development: A Near Utopia

Designed entirely by Ulisses Sabara, BERACA’s economic model values naturally abundant resources and is based on everything that defines sustainable development:

  • Economics: a profitable and sustainable business.
  • Environment: preservation of biodiversity and endemic species.
  • Social: economic and social development, the fight against the exploitation of the most vulnerable (women, people with disabilities or prone to extreme poverty) and safe working conditions.

Each of the 2016 Local SDG Pioneers exemplifies how business can be a force for good in addressing the challenges we face as a global society,” said Lise Kingo, UN Global Compact Executive Director. “Mr. Sabará is a passionate advocate for protecting biodiversity and the environmental integrity of the Amazon. His work has benefitted thousands of families, while also generating economic and social opportunities in the region – making him a pioneer for life on land.”

Today, the business supports 2500 families in 105 establishments in 12 provinces throughout the country.
