An enthusiastic environmentalist, this American superstar believes in responsible and sustainable aquaculture.
A steak or nothing at all
The least we can say is that Americans, huge consumers of farmed meat (fowl, pork and beef), are not fond of seafood: while the average seafood consumption per capita in the world is 20 kg (44 lbs.) per year, Americans consume hardly half that much.
Farmed meat is higher in fat content and not as rich in trace elements and vitamins as seafood. In a country where the obesity rates are a big worry for health officials, this argument weighs heavily.
A glamourous flag-bearer for sustainable aquaculture
As much as Leonardo Di Caprio is the sweetheart of the box-office, he is no less of an environmental enthusiastic and has chosen to invest in sustainable aquaculture. Last March, the star posted this on his Facebook page: « Responsible aquaculture is the most resource efficient animal protein on the planet, and is a viable, sustainable solution to meeting the rising demand for protein. As our global population increases, natural resources are in jeopardy, leaving ecosystems on the brink of total collapse »
A lovely helpful boost for a booming field.
A sustainable solution to feed humanity
Aquaculture is the only food-resource production field in which the growth rate is higher that of the world population.
The commitment of the Oscar-winning(1) actor reflects that of Kofi Annan, twice Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace prize recipient: in 2012, he was the driving force behind the AquaVision conference on « how aquaculture can, in the years to come, contribute to sustainable development to feed the world of tomorrow. » His keynote speech addressing emerging food security challenges sent a strong message in favor of sustainable and nutritious aquaculture.
